Chapter 19

I expected that Connor's leaving would be harder. I expected to feel something more than the mild disappointment of watching him pull out of the driveway. I expected it to be a whole ordeal that I wasn’t ready to face. Seth, leaning against the doorway with a mug of coffee in hand, made it easier.

It hammered because I wasn’t alone. Despite everything, I wasn’t sure how this would go. Seth staying while Connor left seemed to make things seem less unstable.

“How long are you staying?” I asked the man on the porch with me. I didn’t know if I could trust the stability and I hoped he would give me some sort of clue whether I could.

“I thought I’d stay the rest of the weekend,” he offered. He turned toward me. “The real question here is, what do you want me to do?”

I blinked at him. “What do you mean?”

“Are you trying to tell me to move in? This soon?” he asked. He turned to look at the front door. “It looks like you’re still living in a time capsule. We’ve made it so we can fit into your bedroom. But can you imagine sharing it with three of us?” Seth turned back to me. “You’re still living in your mother’s house. I’m not trying to get you to move on from that. I’m not saying you should sell this place.” He stepped closer. “I’m saying you need to make it your home. Then we can see if we fit in it.”

“You’re telling me to claim her room,” I summarized. I didn’t know how to feel about that. I had slept in that room before. Especially after she had gone into the hospital and I wasn’t ready to let go of her. “I’m not ready to do that.”

“That’s fine,” he said evenly. “I’ll be here when you decide to make that leap. But,” he opened the front door to go in, “I don’t think I’m ready to make the leap and move in. Is that going to be okay?”

“That’s fair,” I said, not following him in. Was that supposed to be a punishment? I didn’t know how to feel.

The door didn’t immediately close after him, and he poked his head out the door. “Don’t take that the wrong way,” he said with a little exasperation. “I want another cup of coffee before I have to clean up and figure out how I’m going to balance things. Are you going to stay out here and jump to conclusions?”

“I wasn’t,” I protested.

He just gave me a flat look, raising an eyebrow. He was silently challenging me. I rolled my eyes and his lips twisted up as he waited for me to provide him with something better.

I buckled and moved toward him. “I could use another cup.”

Seth moved so I could come into the house. He closed the door behind me and followed me into the kitchen. I put my mug on the kitchen table and went to get the creamer back out of the fridge.
